My friend Ken, who wrote “Sometimes, Church Is Like Sailing” (see entry dated May 18, 2008), is very involved with the youth in his community and strives to connect them with the Youth Group at his church. When I say “very involved,” I’m talking about a guy whose schedule, home, and financial resources are available to any young person who needs it. Any young person. No matter who they are, no matter what they’ve done. Ken believes in young people.
Check out this beautiful piece of tape sculpture that Ken’s kids created at Youth Group. Did you realize you were looking at packing tape? Ken and his kids learned about tape sculpture here and here.
Ken says the kids worked on the project three or four nights at Youth Group meetings. Here’s how he describes the process: 1) Wrap a kid in plastic wrap. 2) Apply multiple layers of packing tape. 3) Use a razor blade to cut a seam and remove plastic. Ken says it’s a good idea to be careful. 4) Re-tape the seam. 5) Figure out a way to give it structural integrity and place or hang the sculpture. Ken used fishing line.
Here’s a photo of a beautiful work in process!
