President-Elect Barack Obama is reading Johnathan Alter’s book, The Defining Moment: FDR’s Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope. Alter is senior editor for “Newsweek” and a contributing correspondent and analyst for NBC News. This past Sunday, I heard a rebroadcast Diane Rhem’s interview with Alter on NPR. It is, in my opinion, a fine moment in broadcast journalism. Rhem’s questions have depth and precision, and Alter’s responses give us a glimpse into history, history that has gone before and history that’s in the making. Rhem’s sensitivity to Alter’s recent loss of his mother is touching, but more importantly, we get a fabulous story from Alter about his mother’s life. Go here to listen.
